These are the figures that differ between aeroplanes and helicopters. Everything above applies to both.
Aeroplane
Total flight time
1,500 hours
Up to 100 hours may be credited from an approved flight simulation training device, of which no more than 25 hours in a flight procedure trainer or basic instrument flight trainer.

Pilot-in-command
500 hours under supervision, or 250 hours
The 250 hours may be as pilot-in-command, or made up of at least 70 hours as pilot-in-command plus the balance as pilot-in-command under supervision.

At least 100 hours as pilot-in-command or pilot-in-command under supervision.

Helicopter: the 2025 order
CAO-PEL (ATPL-H) 01/2025 clarifies how the ATPL (Helicopter) is issued under Paragraph 2.6, Chapter 2A of ANO-1. It sets no hours or ages — it governs how the skill test is flown and who may examine it. None of this applies to the aeroplane licence.
The skill test must be flown multi-crew
CAO-PEL (ATPL-H) 01/2025, para 3It is demonstrated as pilot-in-command of a helicopter that is required to be operated with a co-pilot, and the helicopter must be certified for multi-crew and/or single-crew operation per the OEM documentation or the approved Operations Manual.
MCC training is mandatory
CAO-PEL (ATPL-H) 01/2025, para 6Every ATPL (H) applicant must complete Multi-Crew Cooperation training, and operators must incorporate MCC procedures into their approved Operations Manual.
Who examines
CAO-PEL (ATPL-H) 01/2025, para 4A current Flight Operations Inspector or Designated FOI holding the appropriate category and type rating may be detailed by CAAB. Where none is available, CAAB may nominate another qualified examiner at its discretion, with due regard to flight safety.
Flying single-pilot on an ATPL (H)
CAO-PEL (ATPL-H) 01/2025, para 5An ATPL (H) holder exercising CPL (H) privileges in a single-pilot configuration may use the same proficiency check, provided its form, checklist and profile cover the single-pilot operations proficiency items.

Every figure above comes from ANO-1 — Air Navigation Order, Personnel Licensing (Gazetted 8 April 2024), and the examination format from the CAAB technical examination syllabus (Issue-1, 10 August 2005). ANO-1 replaced the Civil Aviation Rules 1984 as the basis for licensing in 2024 without changing any of these figures — what did change.
