ANO-1 states the MPL entry standard as competency-based rather than by certificate. CAAB approves the course, and the operator's programme carries the requirement.

Privileges
Act as co-pilot of an aeroplane required to be operated with a co-pilot, plus the privileges of a private pilot licence and of the instrument rating in the aeroplane category.
An MPL holder may go on to an ATPL (aeroplane) once its requirements are met, but stays restricted to multi-crew operations until the specific conditions in 2.5.2.1 a), 2.5.2.2 and 2.5.2.3 are satisfied.

These are the figures that differ between aeroplanes and helicopters. Everything above applies to both.
Aeroplane
Approved training course
240 hours
Actual and simulated flight, as both pilot flying and pilot monitoring. Unlike every other licence here, this is a single approved course rather than hours accumulated separately.

Actual flight experience
At least the PPL aeroplane experience
Plus upset prevention and recovery training, night flying, and flight by reference solely to instruments.

This is the first licence — there is nothing to hold before it.

Every figure above comes from ANO-1 — Air Navigation Order, Personnel Licensing (Gazetted 8 April 2024), and the examination format from the CAAB technical examination syllabus (Issue-1, 10 August 2005). ANO-1 replaced the Civil Aviation Rules 1984 as the basis for licensing in 2024 without changing any of these figures — what did change.
